The public seems interested in finding danger in this activity.Cape Town's aquarium(水族馆) has been with filled with divers who want to swim with the sharks since it opened its tanks to paying visitors last month. Around 70 tourists aged Between l2 and 40 have paid US$55each to an hour with Maxine,Dee and Floyd, the aquarium's three sharks. And conservationists say the project should help change the damage done to the shark's image by the popular movie "Jaws". "People will a1ways pay money to be a bit daring,"said Paul Loetter, an aquarium diver,"Most people think every shark is dangerous, but they have got the wrong idea." Each visitor can swim with the sharks and other fish that share their tank, guarded by aquarium divers armed with a stick to keep off over-friendly sharks. "This is part of a communication and education programme to show sharks are not as bad as every one makes out,"said Tony McGre,operation manager at the aquarium. Len Compagno, head of the South African shark research centre, agreed."It's no joke to play around with big dog.In the same way,a three-metre-1ong shark could put a few ho1es in you,"he said. 56.We may infer that in the movie"jaws" . A.sharks are hunted everywhere B.sharks kill other sea animals C.sharks are disappearing in the sea D.Sharks are man eaters 57.What Len Compagno said really means that . A.you had better not get close to sharks B.you needn't be too serious about sharks C.sharks are more dangerous than big dogs D.sharks are as friendly to people as dogs 58.The writer's purpose in writing the passage is to tell us that . A.sharks are not as bad everyone thinks B.people will always pay money to be a bit daring C.there's no end of dangerous sports in Southern Africa D.the public seems interested in finding danger in swimming with a killer shark B The faces of ederly, happily-married people sometimes 1ook like each other.Dr.Aiken studied a number of couples who had been married for at least twenty five years. Each couple provided four photographs- one photo of each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo to remove any clues. The photos were then displayed in groups:a random(随意的) grouping of the persons at the time of their marriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took Photographs later. Some judges were asked to pick out the partners. They failed totally with the first group.Their judgements were no better than chance. But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage, the judges were quite successful at deciding who was married to whom. They were particularly successful with the most happi1y-married couples. Dr.Aiken believe there are several reasons why couples grow aIike. One reason has something to do with imitation. One Person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowing it. He says human beings copy the expressions of the faces of their loved ones. Another possible reason,he says,is the common experience of the couples. There is tendency for people who have the same life experience to change their faces in similar ways. For example,if a couple suffered a lot of sad experiences, their faces are likely to change in a similar way. 59.The main purpose of the passage is to . A.tell how couples 1ike each other B.show the life experience of husband and wife C.explain why couples grow alike D.describe the study on a number of married people 60.The judges failed to . A.tell couples by looking at their photos taken when they got married B.tell happily-married couples from sadly-married couples C.discover the difference of each partner D. understand Dr.Aiken's study 61.The sentence "their judgements were no better than chance"means their judgements were . A.quite successful B.based on facts C.correct only by luck D.were wrong 62.From the passage we can draw a conclusion that . A.happi1y-married couples are often richer than other Couples B.couples who look alike can live longer C.the influence between couples can be quite strong D.all couples have been proved to grow alike C In the opinion of many Americans and Europeans,we only began to really explore our world in the sixteenth century. According to them, the sailors of the ancient world didn't explore distant parts of the world, they did not have the necessary or skills for lonh sea journeys. However, the people who have the opinion are forgetting two important facts of history. First, sometimes early scientists have an idea which is correct, but scientists in later centuries do not believe it.For example, about 270B.C,a Greek scientist had an idea which we allbelieve today. The earth moves around the sun.But for the following l 600 years scientists did not believe this.In their opinion, the sun clearly moved around the earth. They discovered the truth again only in the fifteenth century! The second fact of history that many people forget is this: Ancient does not mean primitive. For example, the ancient Egyptians knew a great deal about the stars, they used this knowledge to find their way across the oceans. Two thousand years ago a Greek scientist who 1ived in Egypt calculated the distance around the earth. The results of his calculations were close to the real distance we know today! So the ancients had a great deal of scientific knowledge. They also had skills which equaled the skills of today. For example,1300 years ago and before, fishermen in Ireland bui1t their boats of wood and leather.Today some fishermen in Ireland still make boats of the same design. They use tools and materials which are not very different from the too1s and materials whicll their ancestors used. Why? The ancient design of the boat was good, and with skillful sailors, these boats can still sail in a11 kinds of weather. Clearly long before the sixteenth century, peopte had the skill, the knowledge, and the equipment which were necessary for long journeys by sea.The world did not have to wait. 63.According to the author, we began to explore our world . A.in the sixteenth century B.1ong before the sixteenth century C.about 270 B.C D.after the fifteenth century 64.The word"primitive"in paragraph 3 is used in the sense of . A.first B.Precious C.simple D.skillful 65.The fact that modern fishermen In Ireland sti11 make boats of the old design suggets that . A.people are not creative today B.ancient people could be skillful and knowledgeable C.the building materials are easily available D.they don't have the money for more expensive boata 66.The example of paragraph 2 is used to . A.make fun of contemporary people B.emphasize scientific achievement of ancient peopIe C.show that truth will finally be accepted D.prove that the earth moves around the sun D Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be known internationally. His works were well received both in England andinthe United States. He was,in fact, one of the most successful writers of his time in either country, delighting a 1arge general public and at the same time winning the admiration of fellow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the United States. The respect in which he was held was partly owing to the man himself, with His warm friendliness, his good sense, his hapPy spirits, his artistic completion, his 1ove of both the Old World andthe New. Thackery described lrving as a gentleman, who, though himself born in not very high sphere, was most finished? polished, witty; socially the equal of the most well-educated Europeans. In England, he was given an honorary degree from Oxford, an unusual honor for a citizen of a young uncultured nation, and he received the medal of the Royal SOCietv of Literature. Irving's background provides little to explain his 1iterary achievements.A gifted but thoughtful child,he had little schooling. He studied law,but not eagerly, and never did practice seriously. He was free from Presbyterian(长老制)home environment, frequenting both social gatherings and the theatre. 67.The main point of the first paragraph is that Washington lrving was . A.the world's first man of letters B.a writer who had great success both in his own Country and outside C.a man who was able to move from literature to politics D.a man whose personal achievements made him able to sell works of low quality 68.What is implied by mentioning Scott,Poe and Hawthorne? A.Irving enjoyed great popular admiration. B. Scott,Poe and Hawthorne were mainly responsible for Irving's success, C.Irving,8orks were not only popular, but also of high literary quality. D.More Americans than British admired lrving. 69.which of the following best describes the effect of high a personal qualities on his literary success? A.His personal qualities were entirely responsible for his literary success. B.His personal qualities were partly responsible for his literary success. C.His personal qualities had only alittle effect on his literary success. D.His personal qualities had no effect on his literarysuccess. 70.what can we say about Irving's law career? A.Irving began to practice law late inlife. B.It was successful. C.He was an expert on law. D.He spent little time working as lawyer. 71. C.It increased his interest in law. D.It had no effect on his life. E The chances are that you made up your mind about smoking a long time ago--and decided it's not for you. The chances are equally good that you know a 1ot of smokers-there are, after all about 60 million of them, wolk with them, play with them, and get along with them verv well. And finallyit's a pretty safe bet that you're open-minded and interested in a11 the various issues about smokers and non-smokers-or you wouldn't be reading this. And those three things make you really important today. Becouse they mean that yours is the voice-not the smoker,s and not the anti-smoker's--that will determine how much of society's efforts should go into building walls that separate us and how much into the search for solutions that bring us together. For one sad result 0f the emphasis on building walls is the different uses of mi11ions of do11ars from scientific research on the causes and cures of diseases which, when a11 is said and done, still strikethe nonsmoker as well as the smoker. One famous health organization to cite(引用)but a sing1e instance, now spends 98 cents of every publicly-contributed dollar on"education",much of it in anti-smoking propaganda (宣传)and only 2 cents on research. There will always be some who want to build walls, who want to separate people from people and to a certain degree, even these may serve society. The anti-smoking wall-builders have, fairly speaking? helped to know choice more clearly. But our guess, and certainly our hope,is that you are among the far greater number who know that walls can't stand 1ong,and over the 1ong run, we can serve society's interests better by tolerating one another and by working together. Whatever advantage walls nlay have, they can never move our society towardfunda[nentals01utions. People who work together on common problems, common so1utions can. 72.What is the implied meaning of the word"wall"in the passage? A. Anti-smoking propaganda. B. Diseases striking nonsmokerkers as well as smokers. C. Rules to forbid smoking. D. Separation of smokers from nonsmokers. 73. Which of the fo11owing statements is true about the m111ions of publicly-contributed do11ars from scientific research on the causes and cures of diseases striking nonsmokers as well as smokers? A.It is a sad result. B.It emphasizes on building walls. C.It is too much on"education". D.It is enoueh on research. 74.The underlined word"you"refers to . A.smokers B.non-Bmokerg C.anti-somkers D.smokers who have given up smoking 75. According to the ending paragraph, the writer looks on anti-smoking wall-buiders .
